Standard EN SamplePerformance Criteria for Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Construction, Earthmoving, Forestry, and Mining Machines
Also Known As: SAE J1040_200305
SAE J 1040:2003 is a standard that establishes the performance criteria for Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for various off-road work machines. These machines are commonly used in industries such as earthmoving, construction, logging, and mining. The standard applies to machines with a mass greater than 700 kg, which are designed for an on-board, seated operator.
The machines covered by this standard include crawler tractors and loaders, graders, wheel loaders, wheel tractors, wheel log skidders, skid steer loaders, backhoe loaders, wheel industrial tractors, and various attachments such as scrapers, water wagons, dumpers, and compactors. The standard provides detailed descriptions and nomenclature for each type of machine.
However, there are certain exclusions from the standard. Machines primarily used in manufacturing plants and warehouses are specifically excluded. Rough terrain forklifts, 360-degree rotation excavators, excavator-based machines, and attachments with alternate seat positions are also excluded from the scope of this standard.
It is worth noting that additional machine types listed in SAE J1116 JUN86 may utilize the ROPS performance criteria outlined in this standard if directed by other SAE reports, such as SAE J1042 JUN93. The standard also mentions that agricultural tractors are covered by separate SAE standards (SAE J1194 MAY89 and SAE J2194 JUN93).
