Standard EN SampleStandard Specification for Structural Steel for Bridges
Also Known As:
The AASHTO M 270M/M 270-20 standard specifies the requirements for structural steel used in bridges. It covers carbon and high-strength low-alloy steel structural shapes, plates, and bars, as well as quenched-and-tempered alloy steel for structural plates. The standard provides nine different grades of steel, categorized into four yield strength levels.
When welding the steel, it is assumed that a suitable welding procedure will be used based on the grade of steel and its intended use or service. This ensures the structural integrity and strength of the welded joints.
The standard also includes provisions for tension components that require notch toughness testing. These requirements are based on AASHTO specifications for both fracture-critical and non-fracture-critical members. This ensures that the steel used in these components has the necessary toughness to withstand potential stress concentrations and prevent catastrophic failure.
