Standard ENStandard Specification for Corrosion-Resistant Coated Dowel Bars
Also Known As:
AASHTO M 254-06 (2019) is a standard specification that outlines the requirements for corrosion-resistant coated dowel bars. The purpose of this standard is to provide guidelines for the selection, manufacture, and installation of dowel bars that have a protective coating to prevent corrosion.
The coated dowel bars described in this standard consist of a steel core that is covered by an organic coating. These dowel bars are intended to be used in situations where corrosion resistance is crucial, and they can be used as an alternative to stainless steel or other noncorrosive metals.
The standard distinguishes between two types of coated dowel bars: Type A and Type B. Type A dowels have a coating material that has a low bond strength with concrete, eliminating the need for a bond breaker. On the other hand, Type B dowels have a coating material that has a bond strength with concrete, requiring the use of a bond breaker as recommended by the coating manufacturer.
