Standard ENProvisional Standard Practice for Emulsified Asphalt Chip Seal Design
Also Known As:
AASHTO PP 82-16 (2020) is a provisional standard practice that provides guidelines for designing emulsified asphalt chip seals. The practice focuses on determining the appropriate application quantities of aggregate chips and emulsified asphalt for chip seal applications.
A chip seal is a method used to preserve and protect pavements by applying a layer of emulsified asphalt, followed by the immediate application of a single layer of cover aggregate. This aggregate layer helps to improve skid resistance and protect the underlying pavement from deterioration caused by traffic and environmental factors.
Additionally, the standard allows for the optional use of a fog seal, which is an additional application of a diluted emulsified asphalt to aid in chip retention. The fog seal helps to prevent loose chips from dislodging and prolongs the life of the chip seal surface.
