Standard ENStandard Specification for Reclaimed Concrete Aggregate for Use as Coarse Aggregate in Hydraulic Cement Concrete, Single User Digital Publication
Also Known As:
The AASHTO MP 16-13 (2015) standard provides guidelines for the use of coarse aggregate derived from reclaimed concrete in hydraulic cement concrete. The standard specifies that it is not intended for use in lightweight, high-density, or other specialty concrete applications.
When the aggregate materials are processed and manufactured according to the requirements outlined in the specification, and when they are combined, mixed, placed, consolidated, and cured properly, it is expected that a concrete structure with acceptable strength and durability can be achieved. However, the introduction of reclaimed concrete aggregate into concrete necessitates the implementation of quality control and quality assurance procedures to ensure that any potentially harmful materials present in the reclaimed aggregate will not negatively impact the quality of the concrete product.
The standard recommends that reclaimed concrete aggregate be used primarily in non-structural applications such as concrete pavements, cement-treated base courses, sidewalks, median barriers, and curbing. It also cautions against using reclaimed concrete aggregate for structural applications due to the possible presence of harmful materials and the variability in the source concrete, which could result in inconsistent volumetric properties and affect the properties of the concrete produced. Of particular concern are dimensional stability and creep, which may be affected by the use of reclaimed concrete aggregate in structural applications.
