The ACI SP-126:1991 standard was the result of a conference sponsored by the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) in collaboration with the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the Institute for Research in Construction/National Research Council, Ottawa, and the Eastern Ontario and Quebec Chapter of ACI. The conference received over 100 papers from 20 countries, with 70 papers accepted for publication.

The standard consists of two volumes, which contain a wide range of topics related to the durability of concrete. Some of the topics covered include the durability of offshore and marine concrete structures, the freezing and thawing durability of different types of concrete, the performance of roller-compacted concrete, the resistance of concrete to deicer salt scaling, the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete, the durability of fiber-reinforced cement composites, the effects of alkali-silica reaction and carbonation on concrete, the resistance of concrete to sulfate attack, and the crack patterns in reinforced concrete structures.
