Design Guide 13: Wide-Flange Column Stiffening at Moment Connections
Also Known As:
The AISC 813-99 standard, also known as Design Guide 13: Wide-Flange Column Stiffening at Moment Connections, provides guidelines for determining the design strength and stiffness of wide-flange columns at strong-axis beam-to-column moment connections. It covers both unreinforced columns as well as the design of column stiffening elements, such as transverse stiffeners and web doubler plates, when the column strength and stiffness are insufficient.
The standard includes recommendations for achieving economy in the design of these elements. Transverse stiffeners, also known as continuity plates, are used to increase the capacity of the column by enhancing its ability to resist lateral torsional buckling. Web doubler plates are used to increase the flexural capacity of the column flange. The design guide provides specific details on the design of these stiffening elements, including their dimensions, material strengths and thickness, as well as their connection details to the column.
