Standard EN SampleGuide for Long-Life Coatings for Concrete and Masonry - Latex Finish Coatings - High-Build, Low Profile
Also Known As:
AS/NZS 4548.2:1999 (R2013) is a standard that serves as a guide for the use of long-life, high-build, low profile latex finish coatings on concrete and masonry surfaces. These coatings are intended for both interior and exterior use and are applied by airless spray or roller, following the manufacturer's instructions.
The standard classifies these types of coatings as paint Type 38 of AS 2311, and they generally align with the Australian Paint Approval Scheme specification Type 3 of GPC-C-117.
High-build, low profile latex finish coatings are water-based coatings that are used over texture coatings to enhance the overall performance of the paint system. They provide a non-aggregate, water-resistant finish that effectively covers irregular surface profiles created by the underlying texture coating. These coatings offer various benefits, including improved performance, dirt-shedding properties, and protection against carbonation. However, it is important to note that they are not suitable for use on horizontal surfaces prone to water ponding.
These finish coatings are typically applied using a nap roller, but airless spray application is also suitable. The recommended spreading rate ranges from 1.5 to 6.5 square meters per liter, depending on the specific application. They can be used as standalone coatings or in systems that require a primer and multiple coats to achieve a desired textured finish, such as a stipple finish.
The standard also includes additional notes, such as specifying the use of AS/NZS 4548.5 to test the cure of concrete and masonry surfaces before applying the sealer, as well as providing guidance on the use of long-life coatings for cement and masonry in Appendix A.
