Standard ENMethods of Testing Concrete - Water Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete - Microwave Oven Method
Also Known As:
AS 1012.23:2015 is a standard that outlines a method for determining the water content of freshly mixed concrete using a microwave oven. This method is designed to provide a quick and accurate estimation of the free water content in concrete. It is suitable for use with concrete that contains aggregates with a water absorption of less than 3% and has a water/cementitious material ratio of 0.50 or less. However, it can also be used for concrete with a water/cementitious material ratio between 0.50 and 0.60, although the level of accuracy may be reduced.
The standard provides specific guidelines for the drying time needed based on the water/cementitious material ratio. For a ratio of 0.50, an accuracy of ±5% can be achieved with a drying time of 11 minutes. For ratios between 0.50 and 0.60, an accuracy of ±8% can be obtained with a drying time of 12 minutes. It is important to note that the intention of this method is not to fully dry the concrete during testing.
The standard also includes some important notes regarding safety. It acknowledges that the use of this method may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. It is the responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety and health practices and ensure compliance with regulatory limitations.
