Earth-Retaining Structures
Also Known As:
AS 4678:2002 Earth-Retaining Structures is a standard that outlines the requirements and recommendations for the design and construction of structures used to retain soil, rock, and other materials. It also provides guidance on the reinforcement of soil and rock materials. The standard does not specify the methods of analysis to be used but serves as a basis for organizations and authorities to develop their own detailed guides and specifications. AS 4678:2002 follows a limit state format, ensuring that structures are designed and constructed to meet specific safety and performance criteria.
It is important to note that the standard does not cover "revetment type" structures, which are used for retaining soils, rocks, or other materials on steeper slopes than they would naturally assume. The scope of this standard is clearly defined, and the types of retaining structures it encompasses are illustrated in Figure 1.1.
