Traffic Signal Controllers
Also Known As:
AS 2578:2009 Traffic Signal Controllers is a standard that provides specifications for the control equipment used in road traffic signals. The objective of this standard is to ensure physical interchangeability and functional compatibility between controllers from different manufacturers. While complete physical and electrical interchangeability may not be guaranteed, the standard aims to facilitate the installation of replacement controllers with minimal alterations.
The standard focuses on ensuring compatibility between the electronic modules mounted in the controller housing, including the Logic Module, Flasher Unit, and Site Identification Encoder. Prescriptive requirements are included in the standard to achieve this purpose. However, it should be noted that full compatibility between Logic Modules and housings of different manufacture may not be guaranteed due to the unspecified method of dimming signal displays.
In addition to compatibility, the standard also specifies general requirements for the design and construction of traffic signal controllers to meet the needs of users. The technology outlined in the standard has been proven in the field to provide safe and reliable operation.
