Standard ENStandard Test Method for n-Heptane Insolubles
Also Known As:
ASTM D3279-19 is a standard test method used to determine the mass percent of asphaltenes in petroleum asphalts, gas oils, heavy fuel oils, and crude petroleum. Asphaltenes are defined as those components that are insoluble in n-heptane, a common solvent. This test method is particularly useful in quantifying the asphaltene content of these materials.
The standard applies to solid and semi-solid petroleum asphalts that contain little or no mineral matter, as well as gas oils, heavy fuel oils, and crude petroleum that has been topped to a cut-point of 343 °C or higher. The determination of asphaltenes is carried out by measuring their insolubility in normal-heptane solvent.
It is important to note that the standard includes references to explanatory notes and footnotes, which provide additional information but are not considered requirements of the standard. These notes and footnotes are excluded from tables and figures.
