Standard ENStandard Method of Test for Spot Test of Asphaltic Materials
Also Known As:
The AASHTO T 102-09 (2018) standard is a method used to test asphaltic products derived from petroleum. It should not be used for natural asphalts containing nonbituminous matter insoluble in xylene.
The test method involves the use of a standard solvent, such as xylene, to determine the positiveness of the asphaltic material. If the material is found to be positive, further testing can be conducted to determine its "xylene equivalent." The xylene equivalent is the lowest percentage by volume of xylene in a solvent that produces a "negative spot" for the material being tested.
This method provides a standardized way to assess the quality and characteristics of asphaltic materials, specifically in terms of their solubility in xylene and their degree of positiveness. It helps ensure that the asphaltic products meet the required specifications and performance standards for their intended applications.
