Standard ENStandard Test Method for Determining the Thickness of Bound Pavement Layers Using Short-Pulse Radar
Also Known As:
ASTM D4748-10 (R2020) is a standard test method that allows for the accurate and nondestructive determination of the thickness of bound pavement layers using ground penetrating radar (GPR). It serves as a pavement system-assessment technique, providing valuable information about the condition and integrity of the pavement layers.
While this test method can be highly accurate in determining layer thicknesses, it requires the expertise of an experienced data analyst for consistently reliable interpretation of the received radar signal. Operators can gain this experience through the use of the system and training courses offered by equipment manufacturers or consulting companies. Alternatively, computer software can be used to automatically track the layer boundaries and thicknesses.
However, there are certain scenarios where this test method may not be suitable. Pavements with increased conductivity due to the presence of free electrolytes in extremely moist or wet conditions, or pavements with slag aggregate containing high iron content, can cause increased attenuation of the electromagnetic signal, limiting the effectiveness of this test method.
