The ASTM C580-18 standard provides guidelines for determining the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of cured chemical-resistant materials in the form of molded rectangular beams.

The test method covers a range of materials, including mortars, brick and tile grouts, structural grouts, machinery grouts, monolithic surfacings (60 mils or greater), and polymer concretes, which are based on resin, silicate, silica, or sulfur binders.

The standard specifies that a bar of rectangular cross-section is tested in flexure as a simple beam in center point loading, where the bar rests on two supports and the load is applied using a loading nose midway between the supports. Three different methods (A, B, and C) are outlined, depending on the size of the aggregate used in the system.

It is important to note that the results obtained from this test method should serve as a guide and should not be the sole basis for selecting a chemical-resistant material for a specific application. The standard acknowledges that there are various factors that may affect the performance of the material in actual service, which are not fully incorporated into the test method.

In addition to determining the flexural strength, the standard also requires the calculation of the tangent modulus of elasticity and the secant modulus at a specific point on the stress-strain (load-deflection) graph.
