Standard Practice for Determining Variability of Concrete-Making Materials From a Single Source

SKU127819918 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2018 Pages CountPages6

The ASTM C1451-18 standard provides a systematic procedure for sampling and determining the variability of user-selected properties of concrete-making materials. The results obtained from this practice are intended for informational purposes only and do not serve as requirements of any existing ASTM specification on concrete or concrete-making materials. However, a concrete materials specification may refer to this practice as a means of obtaining variability information by specifying the properties to be measured and the lot size and sample unit to be used. This standard is applicable to both producers and consumers of concrete-making materials, with the application details varying depending on the intended purpose of the user.

The procedure described in this standard is applicable to any quantitative property of concrete-making materials that can be measured using a standard test method. It is based on grab samples, which provide a representation of the maximum amount of variation in the material being evaluated. This procedure is particularly useful when grab samples are obtained from the sampling units delivered to the material user, as it better represents the variability of the material used in concrete production compared to tests performed for specification compliance, such as those documented in mill test reports or material certifications. While the procedure was developed for materials from a single source, it can also be applied to materials from multiple sources, depending on the user's purposes. By correcting for testing error and estimating the variability of the selected material property, this practice provides an indicator of the source variation of the concrete-making material.

It is important to note that while this practice does not provide information on the relationship between variability in concrete-making materials and variability in concrete properties, it does provide information on the variability of the materials themselves. Users can utilize this variability information, along with supplementary data or correlative testing of concrete properties, to develop quantitative estimates of the effects of variability in concrete-making materials. The standard also includes recommendations on sampling, testing, analysis of data, and reporting. The units used in the calculation methods described in this practice can be either SI or inch-pound units.
