Standard ENStandard Specification for Lightweight Aggregates for Structural Concrete
Also Known As:
The ASTM C330/C330M-17a standard covers the use of lightweight aggregates in structural concrete. The main objective of this standard is to reduce the density of the concrete while maintaining its compressive strength. It is important to note that the procedures specified in this standard are not intended for job control of concrete.
The standard defines two general types of lightweight aggregates: those prepared by expanding, pelletizing, or sintering products such as blast-furnace slag, clay, diatomite, fly ash, shale, or slate; and those prepared by processing natural materials such as pumice, scoria, or tuff. The aggregates should primarily consist of lightweight-cellular and granular inorganic material.
The lightweight aggregates should undergo testing to ensure that they do not contain excessive amounts of deleterious substances. Additionally, they should conform to specified values for organic impurities, aggregate staining, aggregate loss of ignition, clay lumps and friable particles, loose bulk density, compressive strength, drying shrinkage, popouts, and resistance to freezing and thawing.
It is important to consider that the standard includes explanatory notes and footnotes, which provide additional information. However, these notes and footnotes, excluding those in tables and figures, should not be regarded as requirements of the standard.
