Standard ENStandard Specification for Lightweight Aggregates for Insulating Concrete
Also Known As:
The ASTM C332-17 standard covers lightweight aggregates that are intended for use in concrete that is not exposed to the weather. The main focus of this specification is the thermal insulating property of the resulting concrete.
There are two general types of lightweight aggregates covered by this standard. Group I aggregates are prepared by expanding products like perlite or vermiculite, while group II aggregates are prepared by expanding, calcining, or sintering products such as blast-furnace slag, clay, diatomite, fly ash, shale, or slate. Additionally, the standard also includes aggregates prepared by processing natural materials such as pumice, scoria, or tuff.
The thermal insulating properties of the concrete made from the lightweight aggregate must meet the maximum average thermal conductivity specified in the standard. To ensure consistency in the gradation of lightweight aggregates from different shipments, fineness modulus determination must be periodically conducted. The lightweight aggregate must be primarily composed of lightweight cellular and granular inorganic material.
The standard also outlines test methods for determining the properties of the insulating concrete, which include specimen preparation, determination of concrete density, and determination of thermal conductivity. In cases where the lightweight aggregates are delivered in packages, the manufacturer must clearly indicate the name, type of aggregate, and minimum mass and approximate volume of the contents on the package.
