Standard ENStandard Specification for Blended Supplementary Cementitious Materials
Also Known As:
ASTM C1697-21 is a standard specification that covers blended supplementary cementitious materials. These materials are produced by blending or intergrinding two or three ASTM compliant supplementary cementitious materials. They are intended for use in concrete or mortar where hydraulic or pozzolanic action, or both, are desired.
The standard specifies the acceptable supplementary cementitious materials that can be used in the blend. These materials include slag cement, natural pozzolans, coal fly ash, and silica fume. Each of these materials must conform to the relevant ASTM specifications (C989/C989M for slag cement, C618 for natural pozzolans and coal fly ash, and C1240 for silica fume).
The standard also highlights the importance of understanding the potential changes in the properties of fresh and hardened concrete when incorporating supplementary cementitious materials. Users are directed to the ACI Manual of Concrete Practice for information and guidelines. Specific references are made to ACI documents that provide guidance on the use of natural pozzolans, fly ash, slag cement, and silica fume in concrete.
