Standard Test Method for Determining Cement Content of Fresh Soil-Cement (Heat of Neutralization Method)

SKU141623774 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2015 Pages CountPages11

ASTM D5982-15 is a standard test method that provides a procedure for determining the cement content of fresh soil-cement. This test method can be used for specimens containing 3 to 16% cement and is suitable for soil-cement mixtures with up to 55% particles passing through a No. 4 sieve and a maximum particle size of 75mm (3 inches). However, it cannot be used to determine the content of Class F pozzolan in these mixtures.

The procedure involves the use of a buffer solution that reacts with the calcium hydroxide in the cement, generating heat. This heat reaction is used to determine the cement content. It should be noted that below 3% cement content, there may be insufficient temperature reaction for reliable results.

The quality of the results obtained from this test method relies on the competence of the personnel performing it and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Compliance with Practice D3740, which evaluates certain factors, such as testing, sampling, and inspection, does not guarantee reliable results. Various factors affect the reliability of the results, and Practice D3740 provides a means of assessing some of these factors.
