Standard ENStandard Test Method for Staining and Color Change of Single- or Multicomponent Joint Sealants
Also Known As:
ASTM C510-16 standard addresses the issue of staining caused by sealants on porous substrates, as well as the potential color changes in the sealant itself due to weathering. Staining on a building is considered aesthetically undesirable, and this test method aims to evaluate the likelihood of a sealant causing early stains on porous substrates.
It should be noted that this test method may not predict staining caused by factors such as residue run-down or dirt pick-up by a sealant exudate. Additionally, this standard is useful in predicting color changes in the sealant after exposure to weathering.
The standard specifies an accelerated laboratory procedure for determining if a sample of a joint sealant will stain masonry, concrete, or stone substrates, including marble, limestone, sandstone, and granite. It also aims to determine whether the sealant itself will change in color when exposed to the weather. It is important to highlight that Test Method D2203, mentioned in the standard, measures staining by a sealant due to gross exudations without subjecting the sealant to artificial weathering.
