ASTM C586-19 is a standard test method that is designed to assess the potential alkali reactivity of carbonate rocks used as concrete aggregates, specifically using the rock-cylinder method. This test method serves as a rapid indication of the potential expansive reactivity of carbonate rocks in concrete and is commonly used in research and preliminary screening of aggregate sources.

The primary objective of this test method is to supplement data obtained from field service records, petrographic examinations, and tests of aggregate in concrete. It is not intended to be used as a specification requirement, but rather as a research and screening tool. The test method helps identify aggregates that may have a potential for deleterious expansion when incorporated into concrete.

Alkalies that contribute to the expansive reactions in concrete are typically derived from the hydraulic cement. However, in certain circumstances, they may also come from other constituents of concrete or external sources. This test method focuses on two types of alkali reactivity: alkali-silica reaction and alkali carbonate reaction. However, it is important to note that this test method is not suitable for detecting alkali-silica reaction.

The test itself involves immersing a specimen of carbonate rock in a sodium hydroxide solution at room temperature and measuring the length changes that occur during the immersion. These length changes provide an indication of the reactivity of the rock and whether further tests should be conducted to assess the effect of aggregates from the rock on the volume change in concrete.

It is worth noting that the standard includes explanatory notes and footnotes for reference, but these should not be considered as requirements of the standard itself.
