Standard ENStandard Test Method for Detecting Delaminations in Bridge Decks Using Infrared Thermography
Also Known As:
The ASTM D4788-03 (R2013) standard is used to determine delaminations in portland-cement concrete bridge decks using infrared thermography. It is applicable for both exposed and overlaid concrete bridge decks.
This test method can be used in conjunction with other test methods to assess the general condition of a bridge deck. It identifies areas that are delaminated, indicating a lack of bond between the overlay and the underlying deck. This helps in identifying specific areas that require repair.
The standard specifies the use of an imaging infrared scanner and video recorder mounted on a vehicle to detect delaminations and record the information. However, it should be noted that this standard does not provide a Precision and Bias statement at this time, so it should not be used for acceptance or rejection of materials for purchasing purposes.
Additionally, it is worth mentioning that this test method can be used on asphalt or concrete overlays that are as thick as 4 inches (100 mm).
