Standard ENStandard Test Method for Strength Imparted by Asbestos to a Cementitious Matrix
Also Known As:
ASTM D3752-98 (R2019) is a standard test method that measures the strength imparted by asbestos fibers to a cementitious matrix, specifically for the manufacturing of asbestos-cement products. The test focuses on the flexural modulus of rupture, which is considered the most pertinent property for these products.
The test method is primarily intended for fiber grades commonly used in asbestos-cement products, ranging from Group 6 to Group 4 fibers. However, longer fibers (Group 3) or shorter fibers (Group 7) may present difficulties during the preparation of the filter cake due to poor dispersion and uneven settling.
The measurement is conducted on a laboratory scale and is used as an initial assessment of different fiber grades before large-scale application. The test determines the modulus of rupture (MR) at a specific dry density and asbestos fiber concentration of 10 mass %. The fiber's degree of fiberization is specified in terms of specific surface area and compared to MR values of a fiber with known characteristics at the same conditions. The relative reinforcing value of the fiber under test is established through this comparison.
It's important to note that breathing asbestos dust is hazardous, and precautions should be taken to minimize dust when working with asbestos-cement products. For safe use of chrysotile asbestos, users should refer to the "Safe Use of Chrysotile: A Manual on Preventive and Control Measures."
