Standard EN SampleStandard Test Method for Asbestos Strength Units
Also Known As:
The ASTM D3880/D3880M-90 (R2017) standard is a test method for evaluating the strength properties of asbestos fibers used in asbestos-cement products. The purpose of this standard is to determine the number of strength units that can be assigned to a sample of asbestos fiber. The strength units represent the ability of the fiber to impart strength to the asbestos-cement product.
The test method allows for the comparison of different types and grades of chrysotile asbestos based on their reinforcing value. It enables the testing of small samples, avoids interruptions in production, and provides a standardized method for comparing results across different locations.
The standard also provides guidance on estimating the strength unit value of a fiber blend used in asbestos-cement products by considering the proportionate strength unit value of each component. This allows for the optimization of other fiber properties while ensuring that the blend meets the acceptable strength level.
It is important to note that the test method is limited to grades of asbestos used in asbestos-cement products. Very long fibers (Group 3) may be difficult to evaluate due to lack of homogeneity in test specimens, while very short fibers (Group 7) may not provide sufficient strength.
There is a disclaimer that the strength values obtained through this standardized procedure may not exactly match the strength values obtained in specific manufacturing plants, due to the variations in plant production procedures.
