ASTM D71-94 (R2019) is a standard test method used to determine the relative density of solid pitch and asphalt using the displacement method. The purpose of this test is to characterize pitches and asphalts to ensure uniformity in shipments and sources of supply.
The test method involves the determination of the relative density by water displacement. It is specifically designed for hard pitches and asphalts with softening points above 70 °C. The relative density is preferably determined using homogeneous natural fragments that are free of cracks. The use of cast cubes is not recommended due to the difficulty of avoiding the incorporation of air bubbles.
