Standard ENStandard Practice for Making Roller-Compacted Concrete in Cylinder Molds Using a Vibrating Table
Also Known As:
ASTM C1176/C1176M-20 is a standard practice for making roller-compacted concrete (RCC) in cylinder molds using a vibrating table. This practice is specifically designed for stiff to extremely dry concrete mixtures commonly used in roller-compacted concrete construction. It provides an alternative to rodding or internal vibration methods, which are not suitable for consolidating concrete of this consistency.
The standard covers procedures for making cylindrical test specimens from concrete when the standard procedures of rodding and internal vibration are not feasible. It is applicable to freshly mixed concrete with a nominal maximum size aggregate of 50 mm or less. For larger aggregate sizes, the practice is only applicable when performed on the fraction passing the 50-mm sieve after removing the larger aggregates as per Practice C172. This practice can be used for testing roller-compacted concrete as well as other types of concrete such as cement-treated aggregate and soil-cement mixtures.
Two methods are provided in the standard for making concrete cylinders using a vibrating table. Method A involves using steel reusable molds attached to the vibrating table, while Method B utilizes single-use plastic molds inserted into a metal sleeve attached to the vibrating table.
It is important to note that the standard includes explanatory notes and footnotes that provide additional information but should not be considered as requirements of the practice. The consistency of roller-compacted concrete can be determined using Test Method C1170/C1170M and further descriptions of this concrete consistency are provided in ACI 207.5 and 211.3.
