Standard ENStandard Specification for Concrete Building Brick
Also Known As:
The ASTM C55-17 standard describes the requirements for solid, dry-cast concrete bricks used in structural masonry for both interior and exterior applications. These bricks are made from a mixture of Portland cement, water, and suitable mineral aggregates, with the possibility of including other materials such as air-entraining agents, coloring pigments, water repellents, and finely ground silica.
According to the standard, the bricks must be free from cracks or defects that could affect their placement or compromise the strength and durability of the construction. It specifies that these bricks are intended for utilitarian applications and differ from architectural veneer and facing units covered by another ASTM specification (C1634).
The standard also includes notes and footnotes providing explanatory information, but these are not considered requirements of the standard. It highlights that the concrete bricks can be made from lightweight or normal weight aggregates, or a combination of both. Additionally, if specific features such as density classification, compressive strength, surface textures, finish, color, fire resistance, insulation, or acoustical properties are desired, they should be specified separately by the purchaser, and suppliers should be consulted regarding their availability.
