Standard ENStandard Specification for Pedestrian and Light Traffic Paving Brick
Also Known As:
ASTM C902-20 is a standard specification that covers brick intended for use as paving material in areas subjected to pedestrian and light vehicular traffic. These brick units are designed for applications such as residential driveways, streets, and commercial driveways with low volumes of vehicular traffic, such as passenger drop-offs.
The standard defines three types of brick based on their abrasion resistance: type I for extensive vibration, type II for intermediate abrasion, and type III for low abrasion. The brick must meet the physical requirements specified for the class they belong to. Additionally, the standard includes requirements for water absorption and saturation coefficient, but these are not necessary if a sample of five brick passes the sulfate soundness test.
It is important to note that these brick units are not intended to support heavy vehicular traffic, which is covered by a different specification. The property requirements specified in this standard apply at the time of purchase, and the use of brick extracted from masonry structures for testing purposes is outside the scope of this standard. The standard also clarifies that it only applies to brick made from clay, shale, or similar naturally occurring substances through a heat treatment process.
