The practice involves exposing the newly applied traffic paint film to a simulated rain using an atomizing spray device. This device delivers a spray of water that simulates rain rates ranging from approximately 0.05 to 0.5 L per minute. By subjecting the traffic paint to this simulated rain, the standard aims to determine the paint's resistance to wash-off.
The standard also highlights another similar practice, ASTM D7377, which uses a steady stream of water from a faucet to test the water wash-off resistance of traffic paints. However, ASTM D7538 is preferred for comparing conventional and fast-dry traffic paints as it provides a more controlled and realistic simulation of rain conditions.
