Standard ENStandard Test Method for Moisture Retention Curves of Porous Building Materials Using Pressure Plates
Also Known As:
The ASTM C1699-09 (R2015) standard specifies a laboratory procedure for determining the water retention curve, or moisture storage capacity, of porous building materials. The test is conducted at very high relative humidity (RH) levels, typically around 95 to 100% RH.
The purpose of this test is to obtain values of the equilibrium moisture content at higher RH levels, which are used to characterize the material or as input for computer models that simulate wetting or drying potential under specific environmental conditions. The test utilizes a pressure plate test apparatus, which was originally developed for studying soil moisture content and later adapted for building construction materials.
At higher RH levels of the sorption isotherm, the use of a climatic chamber is not feasible. Instead, this test method uses overpressure to extract water from the porous materials until equilibrium is achieved between the moisture content in the specimens and the corresponding overpressure. Desorption is the only way to achieve equilibrium using the pressure plate extractors.
