Standard ENStandard Specification for Underground Precast Concrete Utility Structures
Also Known As:
ASTM C858-19 is a standard specification that provides guidelines for the design criteria and manufacturing practices for monolithic or sectional precast concrete utility structures. The specification covers the construction and quality requirements for these structures, excluding concrete pipe, box culverts, and precast concrete manholes covered in another specification.
The standard emphasizes the accurate construction of forms and their strength to maintain the dimensions within specified tolerances. It also requires proper cleaning of forms before each use. The aggregates used in the concrete must be sized, graded, and proportioned appropriately, and thoroughly mixed to ensure a homogeneous concrete with the required compressive strength. Concrete should be deposited in its final position as closely as possible.
For the structural design, the standard recommends using either the elastic method or the strength design method of reinforced concrete design, taking into account the specified loading conditions. The design should also consider the number, placement, and size of access openings in the structure. The minimum thickness of the floor resulting from slope should be considered in the design, and duct terminators, knockouts, and sumps should be designed to withstand the loads imposed on them.
Testing of the concrete's compressive strength is required to meet the specified requirements. Joints in sectional precast concrete structures should be designed to be self-aligning during assembly. The standard also provides guidelines for the design of lifting devices, which should adhere to the specified requirements.
