Standard EN SampleStandard Test Method for Measuring the P-Wave Speed and the Thickness of Concrete Plates Using the Impact-Echo Method
Also Known As:
ASTM C1383-15 (R2022) provides procedures for determining the thickness of concrete structures using the impact-echo method. The standard covers two procedures: Procedure A and Procedure B.
Procedure A involves measuring the time it takes for a P-wave, generated by a short-duration, point impact, to travel between two transducers placed a known distance apart along the surface of the structure. The P-wave speed is then calculated by dividing the distance between the transducers by the travel time.
Procedure B, known as the Impact-Echo Test, measures the frequency at which the P-wave is reflected between the parallel surfaces of the concrete plate. The thickness of the plate is calculated using the measured frequency and the P-wave speed obtained from Procedure A.
Both Procedure A and Procedure B must be performed at each point where a thickness determination is required unless specified otherwise.
It is important to note that this standard references explanatory material in the form of notes and footnotes, which are not considered as requirements of the standard.
