Standard Test Method for Infiltration Rate of Soils in Field Using Double-Ring Infiltrometer

SKU192424923 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2018 Pages CountPages8

ASTM D3385-18 is a standard test method for the field measurement of the infiltration rate of soils using a double-ring infiltrometer. This test is commonly used in various applications such as liquid waste disposal, septic-tank disposal field evaluation, irrigation requirements assessment, and studies on water spreading, recharge, and canal or reservoir leakage.

The test method involves the use of an outer and inner ring, with the purpose of promoting one-dimensional, vertical flow beneath the inner ring. The infiltration rate is influenced by several factors, including soil structure, soil layering, condition of the soil surface, degree of soil saturation, chemical and physical nature of the soil and applied liquid, liquid head, and diameter and depth of ring embedment. It's important to note that test results may vary even at the same site, making the measured rate primarily for comparative use.

Certain aspects of the test, such as the duration and liquid head applied, may depend on user experience, the purpose of testing, and the desired information. The quality of test results is dependent on competent personnel and suitable equipment and facilities. Compliance with relevant practices like D3740 can help ensure reliable results, but it does not guarantee them.

This standard test method is suitable for natural occurring soils, processed materials, mixtures of natural soils and processed materials, and other porous materials that are insoluble and meet the requirements outlined in the standard. However, it may not be suitable for soils with high hydraulic conductivity (>10^-2 cm/s) or low hydraulic conductivity (<1 × 10^-5 cm/s), or dry or stiff soils that fracture when the rings are installed. For soils with low hydraulic conductivity, Test Method D5093 should be referenced. This test method is not directly used to determine the hydraulic conductivity of the soil.
