The ASTM D4479/D4479M-07 (R2018) standard is a specification for asbestos-free asphalt roof coatings. The standard describes two types of coatings, Type I and Type II, both of which are composed of an asphalt base, volatile petroleum solvents, and mineral or other stabilizers. These coatings are designed to be applied using various methods such as squeegee, brush, roller, or spraying.

Type I coatings are made from asphalts that are self-healing, adhesive, and ductile, while Type II coatings are made from asphalts with a high softening point and relatively low ductility.
