Standard ENStandard Specification for Asphalt Used in Roofing
Also Known As:
The ASTM D312/D312M-16a standard outlines the requirements for four types of asphalt that are used in various roofing applications.
The purpose of this standard is to classify the different types of asphalt based on their intended use in built-up roof construction, modified bitumen systems, bituminous vapor retarder systems, and for adhering insulation boards in roof systems. It is important to note that this specification does not impose any restrictions on the slope at which the asphalt can be used.
The asphalt used in roofing should be prepared from crude petroleum and must conform to the physical properties prescribed for each type. These physical properties include softening point, flash point, penetration, ductility, and solubility. The standard specifies the testing methods to be performed in order to determine these properties.
