The ASTM C199-84 (R2016) standard is used to estimate the application temperature limits and establish the classification of a refractory mortar. The test method involves heating a pier of brick laid up with the test mortar to determine whether the prescribed heat treatment causes the mortar to flow out of the joints.
The results of the test method are considered to be pass or fail, based on observations of whether the mortar flowed from the joints during the heat treatment. It should be noted that the results obtained from this test method may not align with those observed in service when heating is done from only one side.
It is important to mention that this test method is not applicable for testing nonaqueous mortars.
