ASTM D8-21 standard provides a collection of generic terms and definitions associated specifically with road and paving materials. These terms and definitions are utilized within the standards developed by Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials.

Section 3 of Terminology D8 incorporates only those terms that appear in multiple standards under the jurisdiction of Committee D04. Terms that were historically included in this terminology but have never appeared or no longer appear in multiple standards are listed in Appendix X1. It is important to note that Subcommittee D04.91 does not maintain and update the terms in Appendix X1. These terms are provided solely for reference purposes and may not reflect the current practices, standards, and technology used in materials for roads and pavements.
