Standard ENStandard Practice for Preparation of Viscosity Blends for Hot Recycled Asphalt Materials
Also Known As:
ASTM D4887/D4887M-11 (R2016) is a standard practice that provides a procedure for the preparation of hot recycled bituminous blends for laboratory testing. The goal of this standard is to ensure material quality, compliance with specifications, and procedural uniformity.
The procedure involves an iterative trial blend process, followed by the preparation of batch blends. These batch blends can be used for extensive evaluation, including tests for viscosity, penetration, ductility, aging properties (such as Rolling Thin Film Oven or Thin-Film Oven tests), composition analysis, solubility analysis, and other tests as selected by the user.
To carry out this practice, a representative reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) sample is extracted and the aged binder is recovered using specific test methods, such as Test Methods D2172 and D1856. However, it is noted that alternative test methods, such as using a rotary evaporator, may also be acceptable based on evaluation findings.
