Standard EN SampleDesign and Use of Inserts for Lifting and Handling of Precast Concrete Elements
Also Known As:
PD CEN/TR 15728:2016 is a technical report that provides recommendations for the design and use of inserts used for the lifting and handling of precast concrete elements. The report specifies that these inserts should only be used during transient situations for lifting and handling, and not for the service life of the structure.
The choice of insert is determined by its lifting capacity, which is based on the part of the insert embedded in the concrete or the capacity of the insert itself. The report covers commonly used applications such as walls, beams, columns, solid slabs, and pipes. However, it does not cover double shell walls, floor plates, or beams for beam-and-block floor systems.
The safety levels provided in the report are intended for short-term handling and transient situations. The report only applies to precast concrete elements made of normal weight concrete and manufactured in a factory environment under a factory production control system. It does not cover the design of the lifting inserts independently placed on the market or lifting inserts for permanent and repeated use.
The report also distinguishes between different types of inserts, such as smooth bars, prestressing strands, steel plates with anchorage, and steel wire ropes. However, it does not cover lifting loops of ribbed bars.
In terms of dimensions, the report generally applies to inserts with a minimum nominal diameter of 6 mm or the corresponding cross-section. The minimum anchorage depth recommended is 40 mm, and wire ropes with a diameter less than 6 mm are not covered by the report.
