Standard EN SampleBituminous mixtures. Test methods. Resistance to scuffing
Also Known As:
PD CEN/TS 12697-50:2018 is a European Technical Specification that outlines a test method for evaluating the resistance to scuffing of bituminous mixtures used in surface layers of roads and airfield pavements. The test assesses the ability of these mixtures to withstand high shear stresses that occur at the contact area between the pavement surface and the vehicle tires during cornering.
Scuffing refers to the material loss that occurs at the surface of these layers due to these shear stresses. The test is primarily designed for assessing noise reducing surface layers where raveling is the primary damage criterion. However, it can also be applied to other surface mixtures that demonstrate a high resistance to permanent deformation.
Test specimens for the evaluation can either be produced in a laboratory setting or cut from existing pavements. It is important to note that the test may lead to rutting in mixtures with a low resistance to permanent deformation, which can potentially affect the test results.
