Standard EN SampleBituminous Mixtures: Test Methods - Abrasion by Studded Tyres
Also Known As:
BS EN 12697-16:2016 is a European standard that outlines two test methods, namely method A and method B, for evaluating the susceptibility of abrasion by studded tyres on cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures. The standard is specifically applicable to bituminous mixtures that contain aggregate with a maximum sieve size of 22 mm. These test methods can be conducted on laboratory-produced specimens or on cores taken from a pavement or slab.
Method A, which is an improved version of the "Prall" method based on comprehensive Nordic research, is suitable for assessing abrasion caused by studded tyres using paving grade bitumen. However, it should be noted that the correlation between laboratory testing and abrasion in the field is not established when using polymer modified bitumen or rubber modified bitumen.
On the other hand, method B originates from Finnish experience and can be utilized even when polymer modified bitumen is employed. However, similar to method A, there is no established correlation between laboratory testing and abrasion in the field when rubber is used.
These test methods serve as valuable tools in evaluating the durability and performance of bituminous mixtures under the influence of studded tyre abrasion, enabling engineers and researchers to make informed decisions and improvements in the design and construction of pavements and road surfaces.
