Road Vertical Signs - Variable Message Traffic Signs
Also Known As:
BS EN 12966:2014+A1:2018 provides specifications for two types of variable message signs (VMS): continuous and discontinuous. The standard applies to both mobile and permanently installed VMS used for traffic information, guidance, warning, and direction purposes in circulation areas, including tunnels, on public and private land. The compliance with the standard's requirements is demonstrated through test modules.
The standard defines the visual and physical characteristics of VMS, including durability aspects. It also specifies the relevant requirements, test methods, assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP), and marking. However, it does not cover sign gantries, cantilevers, posts, foundations, signal heads, sizes and shapes of VMS messages, control units and monitoring units (unless inside the VMS), or sign luminance control.
