The BS EN 12697-31:2019 standard specifies a method for compacting cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures using a gyratory compactor. This method is used for determining the air voids content of a mixture for a given number of gyrations or deriving a curve density (or void content) versus the number of gyrations. It also serves the purpose of preparing specimens of a specific height and/or predetermined density for subsequent testing of their mechanical properties.
The standard applies to both laboratory-made bituminous mixtures and those obtained from on-site sampling, as long as the aggregate size does not exceed 31.5 mm.
