The DIN EN 12697-31 standard describes the procedure for preparing cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures using a gyratory compactor. The main purpose of this standard is twofold: to determine the air voids content of the mixture for a given number of gyrations and to prepare specimens of a specific height and density for subsequent mechanical testing.
The standard provides guidelines on how to comply with the equipment required for this method, as described in Annex A and Annex B. It is applicable to both laboratory-prepared bituminous mixtures and those obtained from work site sampling, as long as the upper aggregate size does not exceed 31.5 mm.
