Standard EN SampleRailway Applications: Track - Safety Protection on the Track During Work. Railway Risks and Common Principles for Protection of Fixed and Mobile Work Sites
Also Known As:
The BS EN 16704-1:2016 standard is aimed at addressing the specific risks associated with railway works and providing common principles for protecting both fixed and mobile work sites.
This standard applies to all work activities on rail guided systems, excluding infrastructure of metro, tram, and other light rail systems. It focuses on the risks posed by trains and machines circulating on the working track, as well as trains on adjacent tracks.
The standard identifies five specific railway risks: personnel being struck by a train or injured by wind drag on the open working track, personnel being struck by a train or injured by wind drag on the adjacent track, personnel being struck by a machine or train on a blocked track, machines, material, or equipment being struck by a train on the adjacent track, and personnel being electrified or electrocuted by fixed electrical equipment.
Furthermore, the standard provides requirements for installing preventive measures during the planning of new infrastructure or the adaptation of existing infrastructure. It also allows for the extension of these requirements to third parties if their activities in proximity to the track pose one or more of the identified risks.
