Standard EN SampleBituminous Mixtures Test Methods: Determination of the Water Sensitivity of Bituminous Specimens
Also Known As:
BS EN 12697-12:2018 is a standard that specifies three test methods for determining the water sensitivity of bituminous specimens. The first method, Method A, involves measuring the indirect tensile strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures. The second method, Method B, determines the compression strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures. The third method, Method C, measures the bonding value of a bituminous mixture one hour after mixing.
Method C is specifically applicable to soft asphalt with bitumen of kinematic viscosity at 60 °C of 4,000 mm2/s or less. These three methods can be used to evaluate the effect of water on asphalt mixtures, whether they contain anti-stripping additives such as amines, liquids, or fillers like hydrated lime or cement. This standard provides a framework for testing and evaluating the water sensitivity of bituminous specimens, helping to ensure the durability and performance of bituminous mixtures in various applications.
