Standard EN SampleFloor Cutting-Off Machines: Safety
Also Known As:
BS EN 13862:2001+A1:2009 standard applies to pedestrian controlled floor sawing machines that are used for sawing, grooving, and milling floor surfaces made of concrete, asphalt, and similar mineral building materials. These machines can be powered by electric or internal combustion engines, with mechanical or hydraulic power transmission. The standard addresses all significant hazards associated with floor sawing machines when used under normal conditions and as intended by the manufacturer. It specifies technical measures to eliminate or reduce risks arising from these hazards.
The standard covers the use of rotating cutting-off wheels, whether wet or dry, specifically diamond cutting-off wheels or boron nitride cutting-off wheels. It does not cover other types of cutting tools unless they fall within the machine's design and usage parameters. Several types of machines are excluded from the standard's scope, such as self-propelled ride-on floor sawing machines, rail-moving machines, hand-held portable cutting-off machines mounted on a mobile support to be used as floor saws, and remote-controlled machines.
While the standard does address electrical hazards by referring to relevant European Standards, it does not cover hazards that are already dealt with by other standards for common use. The standard provides references to applicable standards where necessary. Throughout the standard, floor sawing machines are referred to as "machines," and cutting-off wheels are referred to as "tools."
