BS 1377-2:1990 is a British Standard that provides methods of test for soils for civil engineering purposes, specifically for classification tests. The standard outlines the procedures and requirements for determining the basic physical properties of soil, which are necessary for classifying soils according to BS 5930:1981. It should be noted that some of the properties determined by these tests are also required for tests described in other parts of the standard.

The standard emphasizes that reference should be made to Part 1 of BS 1377 for general requirements that are applicable to all parts of the series, as well as for methods of sample preparation.

The standard also highlights the principal changes in the classification tests included in this edition. These changes include the addition of tests for determining the saturation moisture content of chalk, the liquid limit using a one-point cone penetration test, the shrinkage limit, bulk density through direct measurement of an undisturbed sample, and particle density using a large pyknometer. On the other hand, the alcohol and sand bath methods for determining moisture content have been removed from the standard.

Significant changes have been made in terms of the sieve aperture sizes, with the introduction of the ISO recommended series as an alternative to the existing sizes. Additionally, procedures for fine particle size analysis by sedimentation have been amended to eliminate the mandatory pretreatment and the need for several corrections to test observations.
