Electrical Safety Requirements for Cranes and Hoists
Also Known As:
CSA C22.2 NO. 33:19 is a standard that focuses on the electrical safety requirements for cranes and hoists. The standard applies to all types of electric cranes, including electric overhead travelling cranes, and hoists for vertical lifting and lowering of freely suspended loads. It covers voltages of 750 V and less between conductors and is intended for installation in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.
The standard includes specifications for various types of cranes and hoists, such as single and double girder cranes, gantry cranes, semi-gantry cranes, portal cranes, jib cranes, monorail systems, hoists, and trolleys. It also addresses the electrification systems used in cranes and hoists, including bare non-rigid and rigid contact conductors, collector shoes and wheels, and insulated conductor bar assemblies.
The scope of the standard extends to equipment for general industrial and commercial applications, both indoors and outdoors, in nonhazardous locations. However, it does not apply to elevators, dumbwaiters, stairway hoists, tower cranes, manually operated chain-driven cranes, mobile cranes, draglines, mine hoists, guided loads, below the hook attachments, and construction cranes and hoists.
Additionally, the standard covers wireless control equipment used in conjunction with electric cranes and hoists. It sets a maximum ambient temperature of 40 °C for equipment installation.
It's important to note that this is the fourth edition of CSA C22.2 NO. 33, with the previous edition published in 1984 under the title Construction and test of electric cranes and hoists. The standard has been developed in compliance with the requirements of the Standards Council of Canada and has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
